Career
Sibel has over 17 years experience as an Australian qualified lawyer.
Over her career, she has predominantly worked as a Financial Markets and Financial Services Regulatory Lawyer.
Prior to establishing K & I Consulting Pty Ltd in 2022, Sibel was a Senior Compliance Manager for 2 years in the Projects Compliance team at Westpac Institutional Bank. Whilst there, she focused on remediation projects in relation to financial markets data, record keeping and trade reporting.
Over the earlier years, Sibel has worked at some of Australia's largest Banks and Law Firms - Westpac, CBA, NAB, Baker & McKenzie and Clayton Utz, essentially focusing on financial markets (OTC derivatives), financial services regulatory and banking and finance.
Banking & Finance
- At the start of her career, Sibel joined NAB in Sydney, where she advised on and negotiated various corporate and retail security documentation, commercial loan contracts and credit terms. She was also involved in reviewing and advising on corporate and retail leases, licence and service agreements and plans of subdivision.
- After working as a graduate lawyer at NAB, Sibel moved to Brisbane and commenced her first private practice opportunity with Clayton Utz. She advised on securities and loan agreements, infrastructure project deeds, construction deeds and general ad hoc related matters concerning retail banking & e-commerce. Sibel was also involved in working on the Brisbane Airport Link Project, a high profile government project in Queensland.
Financial Markets
- Mid-career, Sibel worked at CBA for 8 years where she provided legal and commercial solutions to internal stakeholders in relation to financial markets documentation and global regulations. She negotiated ISDA Master Agreements and Credit Support Annexes, Global Master Repurchase Agreements, Clearing Derivatives Execution Agreements and other associated agreements. She also worked with bilateral and syndicated loan facility documentation including security documents where hedging was involved.
- After CBA, Sibel worked as a derivatives lawyer at Westpac, delivering advice on global and Australian variation margin (VM) reform, implementing the new VM collateral frameworks, templates and negotiating VM agreements and various other
Financial Services
When the Westpac VM Project came to an end, Sibel ventured back into private practice at Baker McKenzie, gaining more exposure to a broader range of regulatory work. She advised on various regulatory issues relevant to financial products and services, financial markets and general Corporations law. She worked on matters relevant to Anti-Money Laundering, Australian Financial Services Licences (applications and amendments), regulator breach reporting, establishment of representative offices for offshore Banks and general regulator dealings with ASIC, APRA, AUSTRAC and AFCA. At Baker & McKenzie, Sibel was also involved in the MUFJ acquisition of Colonial First State Global Asset Management.
Compliance
Over her career, Sibel has been dedicated to improving and implementing various compliance and governance frameworks - advising on AML/CTF compliance programs and policies, Banking Code of Practice, Standard Operating Procedures, record-keeping and financial markets trading policies, taxonomies and general compliance manuals for financial services firms.
